Showcasing Literacy Week Descriptions:
March 19 – “Generations Read-In”
Is a tremendous community partnership that bridges generations through literacy. Selected school sites will have the awesome opportunity to host a “read- in” that will allow older students to read to your classmates and to have community members from various ages read to older students. The purpose of the day is to demonstrate the importance of literacy and being a lifelong learner with a passion for reading.
March 20 – “Speaker Series” Literacy Non-Negotiable – It Takes a Village
Is a wonderful family event that will highlight the spoken word, aloud reading, and community engagement around the importance of literacy. The event is free and open to all stakeholders: students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community leaders. The speaker series is designed to address the crisis of literacy and the gross achievement gap amongst African American students. The purpose is for stakeholders to come together and be invigorated with insight that has the capacity to transform our schools and community through collective efforts. March 21 – “Expository Essay Finals”
Is a written competition for OUSD students only in the seventh and eighth grade. This day is designated for the student entries that have advanced from the Regionals to the Finals. The participants will not be present it is strictly for the judges. The students that have advanced to the Finals will undergo their final scoring. The winners of the essay contest will be awarded a Chauncey Bailey Scholarship: 1st - $1000; 2nd -$500; 3rd - $250.
